In recent years, female-oriented TV dramas have gained increasing popularity in China. Because of their emphasis on elevating female characterization, many traditional male roles have undergone adjustments. This study selects three female-oriented realistic TV dramas with reality themes: Ode to Joy (Season 1), The First Half of My Life, and Nothing But Thirty. Based on the seven character archetypes derived from the integration of Propp and Vogler’s theories, this study examines the portrayal and function of male characters in these dramas, as well as the corresponding imagination of gender relations. The findings reveal that male characters often embody the roles of antagonists, gatekeepers, helpers, and agents of chaos. Although the former brings significant crises to the female characters, the remaining categories are not entirely villainous. Rather, they help to highlight the female’s self-growth and redemption. As females take on the roles of both the hero and the rescued, they can affirm their life value through the hero’s journey, thus reversing the previously male-dominated power dynamic between the genders. |
