The Replacement of Historical Memory: A Study for the Taiwanese Historical Discourse and Myth System of “the Travelnote about Chikan”by Nishikawa Mitsuru |
The In his work ''The Travel Note about Chikan,'' Nishikawa Mitsuru uses unconventional historical writing to tell the story of Zheng Ke-zang as the true king in the Yenping Dynasty. Through related materials such as Jiang Risheng's ''Taiwan Waiki'' and folk historical memory, he illustrates the unreliability of official Chinese history and insists that ''Ke-zang'' is the orthodox historical discourse. He internalizes the Japanese Empire's ''Southern Expansion'' policy and ''Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere'' as the legacy of Ke-zang's grandfather's successful administration of Taiwan and the South Seas. This imbues Taiwan with the historical mission of becoming a ''Southern Expansion Base'' for Japanese aggression against other ethnic groups and countries. The historical discourse of ''the Travel Notes about Chikan'' and the ideology stemming from the ''Southern Expansion Myth'' reflect the discourse hegemony of the privileged class as colonizers. This empties the symbolic meaning of ''China'' in Taiwan's history and replaces it with the imagined bloodline connection between Taiwan and Japan. At the same time, it highlights the accurate historical role of the Japanese Empire in governing Taiwan and utilizing it as a springboard for ''Southern Expansion'' in Taiwan's history. |
