According to the Derivation Thesis (DT), duties can be derived from the universalization formulations of Kant’s Categorical Imperative. This article defends the DT from Ramsauer’s and Geiger’s recent criticisms of it. The article has four sections: (1) a detailed explanation of the DT and the standard reading of which it is a part; (2) a critique of Geiger’s, and then Ramsauer’s, alternate interpretations of Kant; (3) a rebuttal of Ramsauer’s textually-based attack on the DT; and (4) a rebuttal of Geiger’s philosophically-based attack on the DT. |
