This article focuses on the development of the forensic psychiatric ward and its integrated care model at the Tsaotun Psychiatric Center, Ministry of Health and Welfare. It explores how Taiwan’s emerging forensic mental health system provides integrated treatment for individuals under custodial protection through a multidisciplinary approach, treatability-oriented risk assessment, continuity of care based on the Risk-Need-Responsivity and Good Lives Models, and a phased discharge and community reintegration mechanism. As Taiwan moves toward a more professional, institutionalized, and localized forensic mental health system, challenges remain in legal frameworks, clinical practices, and interagency coordination. Ongoing policy reforms, cross-sector collaboration, and local data accumulation are essential to developing a contextually adaptive model that balances patient rights and public safety. |
