This paper aims to explore the life situations and consciousness of loyalty and chastity presented in the Qing poet and dramatist Jiang Shiquan’s(1725-1785)plays. The author first analyzes Jiang Shiquan’s own consciousness of loyalty and chastity which is relevant to his practice of creative writing, and then discusses Jiang’s concept of xingqing and didacticism in drama. At the basis of the above discussion, the author further analyzes the subjective projection and moral idealism implied in Jiang’s play Linchuan meng, the choices of life value and the loyalists’ suicide presented in the play Dongqingshu, together with the collective martyrdom and the loyalists’ family legend dramatized in the play Guilin shuang. Since the historical characters such as Wen Tianxiang(1236-1283)and Ma Xiongzhen(1633-1677)narrated in these plays are all exemplary heroic figures of loyalty facing their ethical choices at critical situations during the dynastic transition period of Sung-Yuan or Ming-Qing, Jiang Shiquan’s philosophical horizon and artistic treatment shown in these plays is significant and valuable which not only promotes effectively a new type of dramatic form but inspires a new kind of interpretative method in the theatrical world as well. |
