The metaphorical rhetoric refers to the image modified by metaphor. In this article, I discuss metaphors applied in neo-poetry, and identify the succession and innovation of images. To highlight the characteristics of metaphors, I focus on the ''metaphorical objects''. That is, those become metaphorical objects by allusions denote the succession of images. And those from modem knowledges denote the innovation. The succession of images connects the subject and the metaphorical object that results from cultural accumulation. Therefore, it is able to bridge the context of history, to emerge infinite meanings, to re-coin new expressions, and to communicate the present with the past. The innovation of images, on the other hand, connects the subject with the metaphorical object by the similarity of attributes. It highlights the association of similarity, and integrates the subject with the object. The image becomes alien since the metaphorical object is alien, which creates an exotic sense of beauty. |
