The author compares the identical finals ofthe archaic rime categories “Wei, Go, Ji 微歌祭” and “Wen, Yuan文元” between southern Min, eastern Min, northern Min,Pu xian and central Min. Thevariation of finals resulted from internal sound changes or the competition among strata could be clarified through studying the unequal correspondences. Based on the phonological distinctions of each correspondence rule, the probable historical origin of each stratum is discussed. The conclusions are: (1) six correspondence rules andtwo strata could be differentiated; (2) the two strata have different structural features: one is the words from Qie yun Grade I and Grade III of Chinese traditional phonology have identical finals, and the other is the words from Qie yun Grade III have unique finals; (3)the probable historical origins of the former strata is the Jiang-tung dialect in the Six Dynasties period, and the latter strata is from the northern Chinese in Jin period. |
