Zhu Xi’s philosophical theory is considered to be the most important metaphysical system of Song Neo-Confucianism, and has had its enormous impact on subsequent Chinese philosophical developments, and is still influential today. However, most modern researchers tend to apply the framework of Helomorphism as a basic tool to analyze Zhu Xi’s concept of “Li”and“Qi”. This approach can be both beneficial and misleading. The beneficial consequence comes from the fact that this mode of interpretation is activated through comments on a dialogue between Chinese philosophers and their implied rivals in the West. However the misleading consequences are also quite obvious. The most notable one is revealed in the fact that “Li,” according Zhu Xi’s own interpretation, can also be transcendental, and thus differentiates his theory from Helomorphism. To further our understanding of Zhu Xi’s works, this article re-examines the issue of the application of the framework of Helomorphism and discusses Zhu Xi’s theory of“Li”“Qi”and its presuppositions. |
