There should be two criteria for judging the establishment of Ci-poetry studies as a specialized field of learning: the critic's rigorous attitude and the independence of the textual form of Ci-poetry itself. To discuss the establishment of Ci-poetry studies in the Song Dynasty, it is not enough to only focus on theoretical criticism; rather one must also include the tradition of textual research in classical scholarship into the scope of the investigation. There are two aspects to Song dynasty textual research on the original narrative source materials of Ci-poetry (that is to say, two aspects to the textual evidence-based tradition in Ci-poetry studies): one is the examination of the facts regarding specific histories of Ci narrative materials, while the other is the compilation of original stories out of the lyrics of Ci-poetry. By combing the development of textual research on Ci-poetry source materials and comparing it with the development of theoretical criticism, one can see the process by which understandings regarding Ci-studies moved from being relatively ill-defined to being more clearly drawn. As such, one can chart the path through which Ci-poetry studies separated from general miscellaneous studies to become a “specialized learning” on its own. |
