Purpose: This study adopted a dyadic analysis approach to explore the relation between college couples’ love styles and their communication stances as well as the relation of these variables to their satisfaction with and commitment to the relationship. Methods: An internet questionnaire was used to gather responses from 174 dyads-- dating college students age 18 to 25 in Taiwan. The questionnaire included a love style questionnaire, the Satir Interpersonal\Communication scale, a relationship assessment scale, and a commitment scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square, t-tests, a one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The main findings are as follows: (a) There is a significant correlation between love style and communication stances. (b) Couples with consistent love styles had higher relationship satisfaction as well as higher commitment than inconsistent pairs. (c) Those dyads with a congruent communication stance had less discrepancy in relationship commitment than inconsistent pairs. (d) Love styles and communication stances predicted relationship satisfaction. (e) Love styles and communication stances predicted relationship commitment. (f) Different levels of relationship commitment corresponded to different levels of relationship satisfaction. Conclusions: The exploration of love styles and communication stances among dating couples is applicable to relationship counseling in colleges in Taiwan. |
