While there are signs that a new trend is emerging in terms of counselors' attitudes toward sexual orientation, gay and lesbian couples are not provided good counseling practice yet in Taiwan. The purpose of this article is to present an overview of basic issues in counseling gay and lesbian couples. The discussion will include section on the gay and lesbian couples' social experience of growing up in a world that often rejects same-sex sexual attraction, such as social isolation, hardly having chances of raising kids, and gender roles and relationships conflict. When seeking therapy, gay and lesbian couples have the right to expect their coupleness will be affirmed by the counselor as equally valid and significant as heterosexual marriage. The authors conclude with recommendations for training and treatment. |
