The phylogenetic tree enables us to observe the interconnections among literary works and authors, which is its primary advantage. However, this paper reflects on several problems and limitations inherent in such a system. Firstly, literature is inherently complex and diverse, and the construction of the phylogenetic tree risks neglecting this diversity or specific lines of literary inheritance. The cases of Tao Yuan Ming and Du Fu are two important examples in this regard. Secondly, while there is continuity between the Tang and Song dynasties, there are also apparent ruptures. The phylogenetic tree has difficulty capturing these points of discontinuity. For instance, in discussions of the“midnight bell”or the“peach blossom paradise,”one observes a markedly stronger attachment to factual accuracy among Song poets, which sharply contrasts with their Tang predecessors. |
