Through his research of ancient Chinese history and Chinese historians, Xu Fuguan discussed and elaborated on the Chinese Classics, affirming its values of historiography. Xu’s studies of the systems of civil service during the Western Zhou Dynasty along with its culture, and the Six Chinese Classics, including The Spring and Autumn Annals and The Zuo Commentary, had shed keen insight on Chinese intellectual history, especially on the interpretation of The Zuo Commentary, which served as the cornerstone for his academic studies on the essence and values of the Chinese Classics. Starting first with studies on The Spring and Autumn Annals in the Pre-Qin period and the Han Dynasty, and second, the exegesis and historiography of The Zuo Commentary, this article aims to examine Xu’s theoretical perspectives on the Chinese Classics and his contributions to the studies of The Spring and Autumn Annals. |
