This article first points out that the goals of Mencius’ and Zhuangzi's co-governance of the body and the country are not just to achieve a temporal ethical and political order, but is based on a deeper concern. This concern makes them eager to call out the numinous consciousness in people’s hearts, viewing it as the root of ethical value and peaceful world, thus giving expression to the idea of transforming the world through non-interference. At the same time, the article argues how the discussion regarding this transcendental level, including the multidimensional relation between consciousness, destiny and universe, in fact concentrates on the idea of simultaneous sagaciousness and kingliness, and the rationale behind its basic principle. Finally, it is demonstrated that “cosmic resonance” is the ultimate environment for the transformation, meaning that the “ether of the mind” xin qi is the core rationale for Mencius’ and Zhuangzi’s concept of co-governance of the body and the country. |
