On the premise that cross-strait exchanges and mutual trust are on the verge of collapse, this study confirms that students of science and technology in Pingtung generally identify themselves as Taiwanese rather than Chinese, believing that cross-strait relation is an international issue, not a domestic one. Additionally, it is found that their national identification with Chinese culture is also declining. However, after adding the variable of faction, we realize that despite that the Kuomintang party’s election has developed towards“structural disintegration”, the development and operation of local politics is not monolithic. There are many political figures with pan-green grassroots and those with pro-China policy, and it is not necessarily the norm that local governments are not enthusiastic about cross-strait exchanges. When the cross-strait conflict gradually eases, the provocative words and actions of the bold westbound move will also increase. |
