This paper takes Winter Light, a poetry collection by Wu Dai-Ying, as its object of discussion, using the concept of the“principle of expression”as its central theme. The aim is to investigate the primary reason why this collection is capable of generating literariness. In particular, the study introduces relevant concepts from semiotics, using the process of signification as the basis for analysis. It decodes the differences in the relationship between the signifier and the signified in Winter Light, dividing them into two categories:“modes of signification”and“gaps of signification.”The study finds that the principle of expression in Winter Light lies in its use of narrative imagery as a mode of signification, which in turn produces perceptible and imaginable gaps of signification, thus constructing an aesthetic structure grounded in narrative consciousness. |
