The World Loanword Database (Haspelmath and Tadmor eds. 2009; Tadmor, Haspelmath and Taylor 2010) shows that nominal loanwords far outnumber verbal and adjectival ones, indicating that non-nominal borrowing is typologically rare—a pattern observed in Formosan languages. This paper investigates verbal loanwords in Formosan languages and analyzes their morphological integration, with donor languages including Taigi, Hakka, Japanese, and neighboring indigenous languages. Two integration patterns emerge: (1) Treating verbal loans as native verbs, allowing affixation and reduplication, and (2) undergoing word class shifts, such as noun-to-verb or adjective-to-stative verb conversions. Verbal loans offer valuable insight into language contact and loanword morphology in Formosan languages. |
