Despite increasing importance of English writing for academic purposes (E WAP), few studies have explored its role in the sector of medicine. The research aims to investigate E WAP in the graduate programs of medical schools in Taiwan. Results of the questionnaire survey of 43 chairpersons first indicated that E WAP had a significant role for professional development, and all doctoral programs under investigation involved E WAP in the requirements of graduation. About 60% of the graduate programs provided E WAP courses, most of which were elective. Seventy-seven percent of the course defined the role of E WAP by including the words writing and/or thesis/research article in the title. Meanwhile, in addition to the department, Language Center, English Department/Foreign Language Department, and General Education Center were major sources of assistance of E WAP (56% in total). Finally, the chairpersons believed the best candidates for E WAP education were writing teachers and disciplinary teachers, but not general English teachers. Pedagogical implications and future research are also suggested in the study. |
