This paper employs two methods of interpretation of Buddhist verses through scriptures and through commentaries to analyze four sets of verses themed around the concept of“flood,”revealing their rich symbolic significance and implications for spirtual practice. Through the scriptural method, it is discovered that these four groups of verses all begin with questions to introduce the core themes and conclude with affirmative sentences to strengthen practitioners’faith and deepen their understanding of the key points in spiritual cultivation. The verses employ various metaphors and narrative techniques to depict inner afflictions and mental states while guiding practitioners to attain liberation through methods such as“faith,”“precepts,”“concentration,”and“insight.”As for the commentarial method, the Yogācārabhūmi does not adopt a word-by-word, line-by-line commentary approach, but rather focuses on elucidating key phrases to reveal the implications for spiritual practice behind the literal meaning, and explaining the logical relationships between the verses. In other words, the arrangement of the verses shows a progressive structure that clarifies the intrinsic connections between the verses and the“stages of spiritual practice”or the“levels of eliminating afflictions.” |
