There are plenty of volumes and bibliographies in Si Ku Quan Shu, but the issue of article repetition constantly appears; most obviously in Tang legend novels. The present study focuses on Si Ku Quan Shu, Gu Jin Shuo Hai of Wenyuan Pavilion version because Gu Jin Shuo Hai is the first shuobu series, which is worthy of attention in novel research. Furthermore, Shuo Yuan Bu collects sixty four Tan legends, which occupies almost one half volumes of the entire book. Therefore, it is considered to be the representative work in exploring the repetition of Tang legends in Si Ku Quan Shu. However, many Tang legends in Gu Jin Shuo Hai are originally from Tai Ping Guang Ji, and Chong Bian Shuo Fu in the late Ming Dynasty collects and reprints works in Gu Jin Shuo Hai. Also, Si Ku Quan Shu of Wenyuan Pavilion version collects Tai Ping Guang Ji, Gu Jin Shuo Hai, and Chong Bian Shuo Fu simultaneously, which results in the abundant repetition of articles. In addition, some Tang legends have been embodied by literati works and novel collection or been cited by no vel collection, local chronicles, and encyclopedia in later times. When these works are all collected by Si Ku Quan Shu, it is found that a single Tang legend even appears six times. By means of the comparison and counting of Tang legend articles in Si Ku Quan Shu of Wenyuan Pavilion version, it manifests the fact that the compiling attitude of Si Ku officials is that they will not arbitrarily omit the volumes and articles in the original book. It is also clear that Tang legends can be handed down to generations in the multi ways such as offprint, or being compiled in novel collection, series, or encyclopedia. The reasons and significance of their preservation are explored as well. At the same time, the value and importance of Gu Jin Shuo Hai to collect Tang legend articles is also presented . |
