Using the metaphor of the ''New Great Game,'' this article examines the strategic competition between China and Japan in Africa. The new competition, to a large extent, is a direct result of the Belt and Road Initiative. This author argues that the New Great Game reflects the development of multipolar world order. The multipolar order is unrestricted by traditional imagination and continues to evolve. The discussion proceeds in four parts. Parts one and two observe China's strategy of connecting with Africa through the Maritime Silk Road and global initiatives, and Japan's response to Chinese expansion through the Asia Africa Growth Corridor and Free and Open Indo-Pacific. In part three, the discussion turns to observe China and Japan's competition in Kenya and Djibouti. This article concludes with considerations on the prospects of the New Great Game in Africa and new rounds of competition between China and Japan in the Global South. |
