Since its inception by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, the“University Social Responsibility (USR)”initiative has encouraged universities to engage actively in community rejuvenation and economic growth. Universities must focus on sustainable development in their areas while undertaking USR projects, as this serves as a key measure for this initiative. This study delves into how USR efforts can foster sustainability, centering on the collaboration between National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) and the Hsinchu City government in reviving the Hsinchu Dongmen Market from 2015 to 2022. With“KhuiMng Studio”spearheading operations, NTHU team established a robust network within the market, building social capital and fostering a self-sustaining community. Post-project, the once-fading Dongmen Market has become a vibrant tourist spot in Hsinchu, fully integrated into the community’s daily fabric. The study findings suggest that universities, by serving as hubs of trust and occupying bridging positions in networks, can gain access to information benefits and control benefits. This allows universities to become repositories of social capital, establish a minimum viable ecosystem (MVE), and eventually play a central role in developing a multi-centric ecosystem that upholds the enduring success of USR projects. |
