Introduction: The sociology, history, and philosophy of sport are three interrelated academic disciplines that examine human interactions in different social contexts from sociological, historical, and philosophical perspectives. As a cultural activity, sport and its related phenomena reflect social processes and play a role in societal development. Methods: The present study analyzed 4,565 articles published between 2013 and 2023 in seven high-impact academic journals. These articles were analyzed using CATAR (Content Analysis Toolkit for Academic Research) and a“Categorization and Indicator Framework for Research Topics in the Sociology of Sport”for classification. Results: This study identified three popular research topics:“Race and Ethnicity + Education,”“Culture + Gender,”and“Politics and Policy + Race and Ethnicity.”Additionally, three emerging research topics were highlighted:“Race and Ethnicity + Education,”“Socialization + Race and Ethnicity,”and“Education + Gender.”Notably,“Race and Ethnicity + Education”and“Culture + Gender”were found to be both popular and forward-looking topics, indicating their continued relevance and potential for further investigation. Furthermore, the study observed an increasing number of publications from non-English-speaking countries, particularly Norway, Spain, and Sweden. Conclusion: By synthesizing the research trends and the current status of studies in the sociology, history, and philosophy of sport, this study not only examines recent developments but also aims to provide a reference point for researchers when selecting future research topics. |
