Despite facilitating knowledge advancement, the rapid expansion of research in physical education, sports, and exercise science presents significant challenges for researchers tracking current developments and emerging trends in research topics. To address the decade-long absence of systematic research topic analysis in Taiwan, this study examines the clustering patterns of international physical education, sports and exercise science journals while identifying research hotspots and emerging research topics within the Taiwanese context from 2013 to 2023. Employing the Content Analysis Toolkit for Academic Research, this investigation analyzed 78 journals from the categories of sport sciences, and hospitality, leisure, sport & tourism in the Web of Science Core Collection database, alongside publications from first-tier journals in the Taiwan Social Sciences Citation Index: Quarterly of Chinese Physical Education, Physical Education Journal, and Sports & Exercise Research. The analysis yielded 7 distinct international journal clusters: Integrated sport science (sports medicine, biomechanics, and physiology); Motor control and rehabilitation; sports medicine and orthopedics; sports nutrition and applied physiology; sports psychology and physical education; sports industry management; and sports history and sociology. Within the Taiwanese research context, the study identified three research hotspots: Physical education curriculum and teaching strategies; cognitive function, nutritional supplementation, and exercise patterns; and motion analysis and skill learning. Furthermore, two emerging research topics emerged: Motion analysis and skill learning; and technical training and data analysis. Subsequent, analysis of publication numbers and growth trends highlighted the convergence of hotspots and emerging research topics: Motion analysis and skill learning; physical education curriculum and teaching strategies; and cognitive function, nutritional supplementation, and exercise patterns. This study not only reveals the current state of international research in physical education, sports, and exercise science through systematic journal clustering, but also provides key references for understanding the development status and future trends of related research in Taiwan. |
