This practical teaching report focuses on a high school student with cerebral palsy, whose physical function hindered effective communication using high-tech assistive devices. After several unsuccessful attempts, a low-tech Traditional Mandarin Zhuyin (a type of phonetic notation system) communication board was developed to enhance the student’s Mandarin Chinese communication abilities. The board used flip-through Zhuyin cards and was combined with individualized instructional strategies to stimulate communication motivation. The results showed significant improvements in the student’s recognition and use of Zhuyin symbols and phonetics, although challenges remained in recognizing diphthongs and tones. To further optimize the outcome, it is recommended to improve the indexing system of the communication board and to strengthen collaboration between parents and technical experts. Especially in resource-limited situations, providing simple and feasible alternatives can promote the student’s learning and social integration. This report aims to offer a reference for enhancing social interaction and independent communication for native Mandarin speaker students with similar needs. |
