Introduction: Based on the theory of use and satisfaction, this study explores the impact of Esports on adolescents' mental health, specifically analyzing three aspects: Esports participation, viewing, and consumption. The study examines the effects of achievement motivation, social motivation, immersion motivation, and sports participation on adolescents' mental health. Adolescent mental health is divided into four dimensions: Positive emotion, negative emotion, behavioral symptoms, and cognitive function. This study constructs and validates a model to reveal the complex influence mechanism of Esports, gaming motivation, and sports participation on adolescent mental health. The researchers aim to explore how Esports, gaming motivation, and sports participation can promote adolescent psychological health. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design and self-report scales, a total of 1,037 valid questionnaires were collected from adolescent Esports participants. Data analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares to calculate the structural equation model proposed by the researchers to test the relevant hypotheses. An interview outline based on the findings was used to conduct further interviews with adolescent Esports players, practitioners, and journalists, to verify practical phenomena and gain managerial insights. Results: The results indicate that Esports negatively impact the psychological health of adolescents overall. Achievement motivation and social motivation in gaming positively influence adolescents' psychological health, while immersion motivation negatively affects it. The negative impact of Esports on adolescents’psychological health is partially mediated by immersion motivation. Under the moderating effect of sports participation, however, Esports can positively influence adolescents' psychological health. Conclusion: The findings confirm that, individually, Esports can be detrimental to adolescents' psychological health. Emphasis should be placed on the moderating effect of sports participation, which can help counterbalance the negative effects and promote positive outcomes for adolescent mental health. The researchers suggest that schools and community organizations conduct regular mental health checks and seminars. They should also create guidelines and policies that encourage adolescents to participate in sports activities, promoting social interaction and teamwork to mitigate the negative impacts of Esports. |
