This article uses the example of the new main building of the Tainan Public Library to illustrate how newly constructed public libraries can, in the context of social change and the digital age, leverage spatial design and infrastructure, as well as diverse reading promotion activities, socio-cultural and artistic events, and collaborations with other facilities, to transform libraries from mere repositories of books into multifaceted, autonomous learning environments, edutainment exhibition halls, tech application and self-realization maker spaces. Tainan Public Library has created a dedicated reading area and sensory exploration zone for infants and toddlers, established a 24-hour borrowing and returning area for public convenience, provided individual service rooms and dual-view books for the visually impaired, and equipped spaces with software for drawing, video editing, document processing, and DIY maker tools. It also plans a variety of innovative reading promotion activities that extend outward to collaborate with physical bookstores, festivals, and local business districts, thereby connecting the library with the community and making it the living room and communication center for the city's residents. |
