Stele of Zheng Wengong(Zheng Wengong bei鄭文公碑) is a masterpiece of the Chinese calligraphy, and its background is intriguing. According to the Biographies of Zheng Xi(鄭羲列傳) within Wei Shu(魏書), it appears that the stele was privately erected by Zheng Xi's former subordinates and descendants to gloss over his misdeeds. the Biographies of Zheng Xi mentions issues such as the political integrity and reputation of the Zheng family members, as well as their local reputation. This, along with the private erection of the stele, suggests concerns about the issue of“Ming Wang(名望).”This thesis will first clarify the relationship between Wei Shou(魏收), the author of the Wei Shu, and exclude the possibility that the Zheng family was maligned by ''Book of Filth.'' It will then explore the cultural context of Stele of Zheng Wengong and other inscriptions in relation to the“Ming Wang”issue of noble families . Finally, it will analyze Stele of Zheng Wengong alongside the Biographies of Zheng Xi within Wei Shu to examine the factors affecting the“Ming Wang”and the social basis of the Xing-yang Zheng family. |
