This article regards the first seven chapters of Journey to the West as the“wedge”(楔子) of the entire novel, focusing on Sun Wukong’s attainment and surrender. It explores how the author uses the proposition of“eliminate disasters”as a narrative framework and expresses diverse reflections on the concept of“cherishing life”through the detailed portrayal of Sun Wukong’s life experience. The analysis is structured around three key aspects: the philosophical thinking of“putting people first,”the reflection on life through“seeking the truth as an adult,”and the practice of respecting life by ''settling one’s life.”This article approaches the text from the stylistic perspective of Yanyi (演義), and provides a detailed analysis of the first seven chapters. By doing so, it helps us understand the thought of cherishing life, interpret the broader ideas and practices expressed in the novel. |
