The Gantong chapter in Daoshi’s Fayuan zhulin appeared in an important period in Chinese Buddhism, and reflected the understanding of“the numinous communication”(gantong) by the Buddhist monks at the time, using religious travel writing to interpret it. This article explains the religious experience of travel and numinous communication in the early Tang, explores the narrative sequences in the Gantong chapter, and analyses the choice and ordering of material by Daoshi. It studies the connection between sacred and historical space as embodied in notions such as the“Buddhist dharma (fo fa), sacred traces (shengji) and upholding the faith (zhu chi),”and discusses Daoshi’s interpretation of“center”and“periphery”through observations on the psychological and subjective dimensions of space. Finally, it analyzes the specific relation between the space described by the concept of gantong and the development of Chinese Buddhism at the beginning of the Tang dynasty. |
