This article aims to explore how the definition of documentary filmmaking is expanded because of the emergence of virtual reality as a new medium for documentary. It also investigates that how the dialectic relationship between the illusionary virtual and the documentary real can be comprehended within“Virtual Reality (VR) Documentary.”Departure from the historical perspective of documentary and virtual reality, the article attempts to discuss how the evolution of media technology leaves an imprint on the development and definition of both documentary and virtual reality. Taking an example from Director Wu Po-Hung's VR documentary“My Syrian Neighbors,”which stands out to be one of the few VR documentaries in Taiwan and inspired by the real stories of Taiwanese individuals, the article attempts validate and examine the creative technique and viewer experiences in“My Syrian Neighbors”by utilizing the concept of the virtuality continuum in order to comprehend the dual ambiguity presence in VR documentary. |
