The purpose of functional behavior assessment is to find out the antecedents of behavior problems and the consequences that maintain the occurrence of behavior problems. When a reliable antecedent cannot be identified, we need to think about whether there are setting events that impact the relationship between the antecedent and the behavior problems. Setting events that may occur out of school contexts or occur in different contexts from behavior problems are often neglected or not easy to observe. This paper first describes the definition of setting events and the differences between setting events and motivation operation. Second, this paper deliberates the assessment approaches of setting events and the intervention strategies. Finally, the paper shares research of setting events. When dealing with behavior problems, we hope that practitioners will be able to assess the impact of setting events on the relationship of antecedent-behavior-consequence to develop a more efficient function-based intervention plan. |
