This study adopts corpus linguistics approach and critical discourse analysis to examine representation of "New Second Generation" (NSG, Xin Er Dai) in Taiwan's mainstream newspaper. NSG refers to the offspring of the transnational marriages between Taiwanese men and Southeast Asian women since late 1990s. Previous studies found that the mainstream media coverages convey "negative images" on both "New Inhabitant" and NSG during 1995-2006; however, it is found that more "positive images" on both have emerged during 2007-2015. We examine the representation of NSG based upon a corpus, consisting of news coverages on NSG from Taiwan's three mainstream newspapers-Liberty Times, China Post, and United Daily News -from 2005 to 2016. Our analysis yields several significant findings. First, in general, 2006 and 2015 are two peak years of reporting for NSG. Second, the words used to describe NSG have "turned" less discriminating or even more positive. Third, NSG has gained "subjectivity" in terms of media representation. Last, even though more "positive image" constructions on NSG found in the reports of the 2013-2016 period, NSG is a "desired object" in the eyes of mainstream society. |
