This article examines the evolution of media content regulation in Taiwan. First of all, the National Communication Commission (NCC) has encouraged citizen participation in the process of media regulation. Further mechanism to strengthen co-regulation is expected to be improved. Secondly, in addition to engage citizens to evaluate media content which meets community standard, the NCC should enforce laws to prevent improper intervention of political and commercial forces in order to ensure the truthiness of information. This article suggests that the NCC should take media performance into consideration in the process of issuing and renewal of media license. Besides, the NCC should respond to media convergence and propose an efficient mechanism to ensure information flow via various platforms within the sound market order. The last but not the least, by working with relevant government sectors, the NCC should and play a more active role in policy making and media funding to encourage the production of quality content. |
