The purpose of oral health is to maintain cleanliness and comfort, protect the integrity of mucous membranes, reduce bacteria, and prevent infections. It is also a manifestation of social interaction etiquette. Oral health af-fects chewing, eating, and swallowing, mak-ing it closely related to overall health. Oral is-sues are mainly caused by dental plaque, a biofilm formed by the combination of bacte-ria and food residues. Dental plaque is the primary cause of gum inflammation, perio-dontal disease, and tooth decay. Therefore, the most necessary and only method for oral health is to maintain tooth cleanliness through brushing. However, brushing alone cannot completely remove dental plaque due to the difficulty of eliminating biofilms. Unlike free-living microorganisms, the extra-cellular polymeric substances(EPS)secreted by bacteria are considered a complex defense mechanism. EPS protects bacteria from unfavorable growth environments and shields organisms from threats such as UV ra-diation, dryness, oxidants, antibiotics, and bi-ocides. Therefore, in addition to brushing, it is essential to use toothpaste products with antibacterial properties that inhibit biofilm formation to maintain oral cleanliness and overall oral health. |
