Research and practice are closely related to each other in clinical work. No matter from empirical or practice aspect, there are few literature addressed on the issue of group establishment. In our professional roles as clinical psychologists and psychiatrist, we formulate the creating process of group psychotherapy The article addresses on many establishing issues that therapists should consider before the first session of group psychotherapy. Those issues are the decisions for the nature of group, the cooperation of co-leadership, the screening of group members, initial assessment and the preparation for the first session. We suggest that the choice of group nature is influenced by many reality factors. The willingness of group leader is essential for the group establishment. Leader's ''good enough but not perfect'' expectation is important for the maintainance of group. The article suggests several ways to approach various internal and external difficulties in the group establishing process. Further empirical investigation and clinical discussion are needed. |
