The Taiwanese Kana Phonetic Characteristics about the Vocabulary in Taiwan Tuyu Quanshu

During the colonial period, the Taiwan Governornment General's Office（臺灣總督府）, in an effort to address communication issues, collaborated with the private sector to publish several Taiwanese language textbooks. The focus of this analysis is on the Taiwan Tuyu Quanshu（臺灣土語全書）, which is one of the textbooks published by the private sector. The book ''Taiwan Tuyu Quanshu,'' co-authored by Shichiro Tanabe（田部七郎）and Tsai Chang-chi（蔡章機）, not only has distinctive markings for Taiwanese but also warrants exploration into their learning experiences. Therefore, this study uses the phonetic spelling and tone symbols of relevant vocabulary in ''Commerce''（商事）and ''Business,''（商業）authored by the compilers, as the corpus analysis subjects, examining the unique aspects of the phonetic system at that time.
Through research, it was found that although Taiwan Tuyu Quanshu did not accurately mark the phonetic details of the Taiwanese language, it demonstrated the characteristics of Taiwanese observed by the Japanese at that time, including nasal sounds and glottal stops. Consequently, the Taiwanese language marking at that time was still in its early stages, and Taiwan Tuyu Quanshu proposed important features of the Taiwanese language in its marking system, revealing its understanding of the Taiwanese language at that time.
