The purpose of this paper is to illustrate John Dewey’s (1859-1952) curricular thoughts based on the transcripts of two of his classroom lectures at the University of Chicago in the 1898-1899 academic year on the subject of Herbart’s theory. After acknowledging in the preface that the two records have not been cited in a number of articles on both sides of the Taiwan Strait that discuss Dewey’s and Herbart’s theory side by side, this paper adopts an analytical and integrative critical approach to interpret and reflect on the above transcripts, and then describes the discussion of Herbart’s theory in the transcripts of Dewey’s two lectures in the following three aspects: philosophy, organization, and methodology of the course. In sections two through four, the course thoughts as shown in the discussion of Dewey’s two classroom lectures on the Herbart’s theory are presented. Finally, the fifth section concludes with research reflections and suggestions. |
