In September 2020, an indigenous dengue fever cluster occurred in Wuliao, Sanxia District, New Taipei City. From the first case diagnosed on September 16 to the end of the monitoring period (November 5), 44 cases were identified, including 39 and 5 cases living in New Taipei City and Taoyuan City, respectively. This outbreak's location was Wuliao, one of the important places in New Taipei City that produces Oldham bamboo shoots. Most residents live by planting bamboo shoots, and wholesalers come from other counties to purchase them. As a result, the difficulties in controlling the outbreak were not only due to natural mosquito breeding habitats in Wuliao, but also the characteristics of the local industry. Since the local outbreaks that occurred in New Taipei City in recent years had been identified near vegetable farms or mountainous areas, we recommended that the local government should take a survey of residents who engaged in agriculture, and to raise awareness and alertness of dengue fever among people living in remote mountainous areas, which would enhance the effectiveness of controlling outbreak in early stage. |
