In December 2022, 16 infants and young children diagnosed with enterovirus infections in an infant daycare center were identified in the Population Intensive Institutions Infectious Disease Surveillance Operation System. Clinical specimens were collected from four affected children; three tested positive for coxsackievirus A6 and one positive for enterovirus D68. Through on-site investigations, it was found that the aprons used by the daycare center staff were only changed every week, not daily. Teachers also provided comfort by hugging the infants and young children, which could have facilitated transmission within the classroom. Additionally, four cases in different classes were siblings, suggesting possible cross-classroom infections through family contacts. In this article, we shared the experiences and measures taken during this incident to remind infant daycare centers to encourage sick leaves for affected infants and young children, strengthen environmental disinfection, and reduce the risk of pathogen transmission among caregivers. As preschool-aged infants and young children are at high risk for severe enterovirus infections, it is crucial to enhance parental education for affected cases, ensure home isolation, and avoid contact with other infants and young children to prevent further outbreak spread. |
