The purpose of this study aimed to explore the effect of infusing Kanakanavu culture in the aesthetic curriculum for indigenous young children and the professional development of teachers’aesthetic teaching. Using action research, the researcher served as the teacher; the advisor and kindergarten teachers served as collaborative researchers in this study. The participants were 20 indigenous young children in a mixed-age preschool class. Data sources included classroom observations, children’s learning sheets and artworks, learning assessments in the aesthetic domain, teaching reflection notes, and feedbacks of the co-teachers. The results showed that the young children applied their senses to explore the Kanakanavu traditional dress, plants, and food. They also applied the multivarious art media of visual arts, traditional songs, and drama play to perform and create the arts. They further responded to and appreciated the traditional songs and stories in the drama play. Through this action research, the researcher promoted her aesthetic teaching abilities. This study provides a reference of infusing the indigenous culture in early childhood aesthetic curricula for preschool educators. |
