This article introduces the rise of a new learning and research information technology-VTuber, its technical characteristics, its application in the field of learning, and future research suggestions. VTuber is generally believed to have originated in 2017 as the Japanese virtual character Kizuna Ai. With the rise of information technology, it has spread rapidly and has different application types. By the end of 2022, the top VTubers had millions of subscribers, and their cumulative revenue reached nearly 100 millionwith20,000 VTubers active online. The popularity of VTuber has made it a virtual teacher and another option for online learning during the Covid-19 epidemic. VTuber brings fresh feelings to students. Further, it stimulates students' interlaced experience between reality and imagination and increases students' learning motivation. In the emerging research topic of VTuber, this paper summarizes the current research direction and its educational application challenges and puts forward three suggestions for its future research direction. |
