This study employs official historical records, biographies of Buddhist monks, and tomb inscriptions to explore the motivations behind the ordination of nuns from the Tang Dynasty's imperial and aristocratic backgrounds. It then discusses the challenges faced by Tang Dynasty women in their adherence to Buddhism, as well as the conflicts between the identity of Buddhist nuns and traditional female roles. The objective of this research is to gain an understanding of the decisions and responses of aristocratic women in the Tang Dynasty when confronted with matters related to faith, family, and marriage. By doing so, it aims to clarify the image of Tang Dynasty women reflected through the activities and status of aristocratic Buddhist nuns. |
