Fantastic art and fantasy literature both encompass captivating stories filled with fantasy and imagination, with fantasy painting emphasizing compelling visual presentation and content. The genesis of this study stems from the author's discovery during the search for fantastic art-related information, finding the frequent interchangeability of the terms ''Fantasy Art'' and ''Fantastic Art,'' making it challenging to differentiate their nuances in Chinese translation. Regardless of whether they are translated as fantastic art, imaginative art, marvelous art, or fantasy art, the visual expressions displayed are remarkably similar. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the terminology of fantasy art and fantastic art, analyze the distinction between contemporary and traditional fantastic art, explore the styles and definitions of fantastic art, and investigate its relationship with fantasy literature and ''The Secondary World''. Subsequently, it enumerates works spanning different eras that are based on the foundation of ''fantastic'' and ''imaginative,'' synthesizing fantasy elements from the inspiration behind artists' creations. The study attempts to trace the developmental context of fantastic art in art history, considering its yet-to-be-defined artistic style, and ultimately concludes by summarizing the distinctive features of fantastic art in painting. |
