The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is primarily an agricultural country with over 70% of its population living in rural areas. The government has pursued agricultural development plans to boost farmers' income and reduce poverty. Laos has implemented economic reforms since 1986 to transform its socialist economy into a market economy, with international trade and China's influence being crucial factors in this process. This study offers an in-depth examination of the current state, trends, and opportunities of rural development in Laos, focusing specifically on the impact of international trade and Chinese investment. Utilizing a literature review methodology that includes academic journal articles, World Bank reports, and statistical data, the paper highlights the critical role of China in transforming the agricultural sector and rural communities in Laos. It illustrates how increased reliance on Chinese investments not only fosters economic growth but also reshapes the livelihood strategies of rural households and the overall rural landscape, making China's involvement indispensable to Laos's ongoing economic development efforts. |
