Histories of Ming Dynasty Literature often focus on important officials, major literary figures ( Li Dongyang, the Seven Scholars, Chen Zilong), styles ( Taige, Tang-Song), and schools ( Gong’an, Jingling ) , and neglect Cao Xuequan. However, Qian Qianyi's Biographies of Poets in Historical Anthologies and 「Biographies in the Literary Garden」 in The Ming History already paid attention to Cao and the development of poetry in the Fujian region.
Before a thorough study can be done on Cao's biography, writing, literature, and thoughts, this article makes initial investigations into confusing issues still being debated in the current academic circle. Such issues include Cao's years of birth and death, location of his ancestral residence, his marriage, publications of his anthologies of poems and essays, editorial process and volumes of historical anthologies of poetry, etc.
This article also covers published and unpublished photocopies as well as electronic searches of Cao's data. |
