This is one of papers about ghost narrative. The paper focuses on the middle-aged female character's ghostly encounter in ”Soul in Drizzle ”,the story of Ping Lu. These ghostly encounters include a seeping pipe from a toilet, smoke which appears through the wall, lift which opens automatically, and a phone which rings by itself. When this female character finds a stain on the ceiling of her bedroom, the old apartment where she lives with her man, another woman's husband. She suddenly realises how fragile and unfulfilling her relationship is with this man. So, she begins to fight with this man and cause a life in the relationship between herself and that man, starting from the entangled, to the interweaved, the opposed, and then to the refusal. Finally, she finds herself.
This fiction is included in a book entitled“Clotted Spring”, containing three stories that revolvedaround the same image—an old apartment. This is considered to be the best work of Ping Lu's so far. Some papers which have previously discussed issues such as sex, power, body, space, identity, are based on this book, however, my paper is trying to create a different discussion from another perspective, the revealing model of how this middle-aged major female character, the narrator of this story, finds herself through ghostly experiences. This is not only a way to transfer the experience from“the place where she is but not owning ”to“ the place where she feels at home even when she is alone ”,but also a metaphor which symbolizes a fragment of urban life by linking her experiences which are scattered in city life. In other words, the ghost narration is, a way to explore secluded minds and explain visible situations, like a translation of space, a transitional experience where she can find herself through an alter ego. This paper is trying to indicate the function of ghost narratives by taking it as a genre. |
