It was believed that the hegemonic masculinity was no more the monolithic form of masculinity with the progress of feminism and LGBT social movements. Thus, there is not a universal or natural type of masculinity, masculinities are plural and dynamic concepts. Sociologists of sport argues that researchers shou be aware of those sport- related gender qualities and their gender implications. It is still important to focus on the constructions of masculinities in leisure sports. Men’s study has been taken as an emerging research approach in western sport sociology. However, men’s study was still at an initial stage in Taiwan’s sport sociological academic filed. This study reviews the existing male studies in the West, the existing discourses on masculinity in the sports field, and the limitations of the existing research in Taiwan. It looks forward to the future with a qualitative perspective and examines the development of the gender discourse of male leisure sports in Taiwan. Based on the sporting experience of Taiwanese men, it reveals the gender implications embodied in its consumption and practice. |
