Mount Omei, the sacred mountain in the western part of Szechuan Province, is botanically one of the most collected areas in China. Its exceedingly rich vegetation was made known by early collectors like E. Faber, E. H. Wilson and others, whose explorations yielded many novelties in botany. Subsequently it was frequented by many other plant collectors and even up to the present, new species are still continuously being discovered from the mountain. Probably no other single locality in China has yielded as many new species as Mount Omei. Though Mount Omei is botanically a well known and classic collecting ground, little has been discussed on its phytogeographic significance. |
