The multinomial Probit model is employed in this study to examine the choices of technology strategy in the Taiwan's manufacturing sector. The technology strategies are divided into four categories: ''both R&D and purchased technology'', ''only R&D', ''only purchased technology'' and ''neither R&D nor purchased technology''. Using data from the manufacturing survey of 2001 Industry, Commerce and Service Census, the empirical results suggest that firms engaged in the choices of technology strategy tend to be larger firm size; they are also with a higher skilled labor ratio and a higher exporting ratio. More specifically, Younger firms tend to engage in ''only R&D'' and''only purchased technology''. Firms with a larger advertisement density tend to engage in ''both R&D and purchased technology'' and''only R&D''. Finally, firms engaged in ''only purchased technology'' are those with greater foreign direct investment. |
